One of the oldest forms of entertainment is the circus. Even in today’s modern age, many people still enjoy being entertained by watching circus acts. Here are the top five most common stunts and acts that are performed at the circus. On with the show!

  1. Stilt Walkers. Stilts make a person seem much taller than they really are. Stilts can be poles, pillars or posts. Walking stilts are frequently made from wooden poles with platforms for the performer’s feet, usually covered by extra long costume pants for cover. Stilt walkers are the extra-tall people you see at the circus and use very much the same apparatus as the first stilts ever used.
  2. Fire Breathers. This is considered one of the most popular circus acts. Fire breathers make use of a special kind of fuel that only ignites if it is sprayed from the mouth into the air in a tiny mist. The mist makes the fire bigger and looks thrilling. Fire breathing requires proper fuel and skill to succeed. A related skill is fire dancing, in which the performer uses flaming poles or other apparatus to twirl around, allowing persistence of vision to see the fire make swirls and designs in the night air.
  3. Jugglers. Another very common and famous attraction at circuses is juggling, especially toss juggling, where two jugglers exchange juggled items through the air to one another. Jugglers typically use balls, clubs, or rings for props, although daredevil jugglers may use fire, knives or even chainsaws.
  4. Animal Acts. This is also an all-time favorite for kids and adults alike. Animal acts involve a trainer and a trainable animal. The animals that are used during animal acts are usually elephants, monkeys, sea lions, bears, lions, tigers, leopards, parrots, and other hard-to-tame animals, which can make their dangerous acts look spectacular. However, animal acts have a dark side. Many animal welfare and other environmental organizations are against the use of animals in circus shows because of many reported cases of animal cruelty, where the animals weren’t taken care of properly, or didn’t get enough exercise, confined to small cages or other problems. Nevertheless, when it’s done right in a cruelty-free environment, animal shows are great fun.
  5. Sword Swallowers. The last on this list is the sword swallowing act. This is considered an ancient art that is performed by having a sword pass through the mouth of the performer and down the throat. This is among the most dangerous stunts or acts in the circus, which can lead to major injuries and possible death. Definitely not an act to try at home.

The stunts that circus actors perform are made possible through years of hard work and practice. These top five acts are done by professionals and should never be tried at home unless performed under the trained supervision of a veteran of the circus.

Hopefully this top five list gave you some pleasure and brought some respect for the hard work circus performers endure to make their jobs look so easy and fun. Show your support by going to the circus when it travels to your town.
