‘Nomadland’ takes top honors at Golden Globes

Van life movie “Nomadland” that features real nomads in the cast took the Golden Globe for best picture in the drama category.

The film’s director Chloe Zhao became the first woman of Asian descent to win in the best director category, and the first woman to win the award since Barbara Streisand won for “Yentl” in 1984.

“Nomadland” follows a series of cleverly woven snapshots in the life of a woman named Fern, played by Frances McDormand, who leaves the dying town of Empire, Nevada, to join a group of mostly vandwellers as they crisscross the western states seeking work and community.

The movie co-stars real-life nomads including Charlene Swankie, Linda May, Suanne Carlson and Bob Wells playing themselves. Carlson and Wells are also the founders of Homes On Wheels Alliance or HOWA, a nonprofit agency that assists people transitioning to the nomad life and supports those who have already shed their “sticks and bricks” for the mobile life.

In a poignant moment during her award acceptance, Zhao gave a nod to an iconic motto in the nomad community: “We don’t say goodbye, we say see you down the road.”
