Free content is making the web expensive

In a column for Bloomberg Opinion, technology writer Alex Webb asserts that the reason why the web is getting expensive to navigate, with digital gatekeeping such as content streaming subscriptions and Twitter’s new Super Follow feature, is the cost to media giants, including the New York Times, to advertise their services in places we take for granted as “free,” such as Facebook and Google Search.
